ERIE CANAL TRAIL PORTION ADOPTED BY GATES DEMOCRATS
At the April 4th Gates Democratic Committee meeting, the Committee
approved adopting the section of the Erie Canal trail between Lyell Avenue
and Buffalo Road. "This trail is one of the hidden assets of Gates which
our Committee plans to enhance as a part of our commitment to better the
Community of Gates." Said newly elected Chairperson Susan Swanton. "The
more opportunities families, walkers and bicyclists have to enjoy this
historic and scenic part of Gates, the better. Too much undergrowth blocks
the bike trail view of the canal now. Our volunteering to 'adopt' this
portion of the trail will help!"
Niles Oliver, Gates Erie Canal Trail coordinator, expressed his
appreciation for the Gates Democrats adopting the last section of the five
miles of canal trail that borders the Town of Gates. "The Adopt-A-Trail
Program is an excellent example of the partnerships between the Canal
Corporation and numerous organizations to enhance and promote the Canalway
Trail." Says John Platt, Executive Director, of the NYS Thruway
Authority/Canal Corporation.
The Gates Democrats will hold their 1st trail assessment review to
evaluate areas needing attention on the trail Saturday, April 24 at 10 am
starting at the Lyell Avenue parking area. All interested in helping on
the trail are encouraged to attend.
The Gates Democratic Committee held their organizational meeting March 4th
and already have 45 Democrats on their new committee, covering 19 of
Gates' 35 Election Districts. They will be meeting the 1st Tuesday evening
of the month at the Hidden Valley Club House. The next meeting will be May
4th The meeting is open to all registered Democrats. Please call Susan
Swanton in advance at 247-0142 or email her at <sswanton@ggw.org>.
